Indian food tastes even better when there’s a Bollywood movie playing in the background. Seriously. The bouncy bhangra beats supply a rhythm for your eating, even though Billu’s would hold its own without it. The Punjabi and south Indian cuisine here is top-notch: butter chicken $14.90, creamy and mellow, is the “pride of kitchen”, according to the owner, while lamb vindaloo $15.90 will satisfy chilli extremists. Thalis, boasting an assortment of small curries, rice, pickles and salad, are good value and vegetarians can get their fill with a good selection of cottage cheese dishes and dhal, such as dalmaklani, creamy lentils with tomato and onion $8.90. Check out the south Indian menu packed with dosai, thin, savoury pancakes mixed with other ingredients such as cashews and coconut or stuffed with potato. We hear a purely vegetarian snacks and tea house is opening soon. Keep an eye out.

Wigram Street at night is like a Bollywood set with all the restaurants and gardens twinkling with coloured lights. Ginger has an outdoor dining area, comfortable indoor dining rooms and a large function room. Attentive hosts Vanadana and Nitin serve mainly northern Indian cuisine. Share a tandoori platter $16.90 and a paneer pakora, deep-fried spicy battered cottage cheese $8.50, then perhaps a few mild-to-hot mughlai curries flavoured with dried fruits and spices. Recommended is slow-cooked lamb rezzala $14.90. Some sauces are repetitive and cottage cheese is featured in most vegetarian dishes but it’s an enticing menu and a great place for group dining. Don’t miss dessert: pistachio kulfi (Indian icecream) and, to keep your sugar intake in the upper register, gulab jamun (dumplings in rosewater syrup) $6 each. Delectable.
