Tucked away near Auburn’s new train station, this eatery serving Persian (Iranian) comfort food is easily missed because it sits high above street level. Start with a tangy eggplant dip such as mirza ghassemi, or yoghurt with wild Persian garlic, both $6. Fesenjan is a deliciously tangy stew of chicken and walnuts in a pomegranate sauce $13, while qeymeh showcases lamb with dried Iranian lime and split peas $11. From the grill, the aptly named Meat Lovers $20 contains three skewers of chicken, lamb mince and lamb tenderloin served on a mound of impossibly light saffron rice to soak up the juices. To finish, if the reputed saffron icecream isn’t available, rosewater sorbet with rice vermicelli, doused with sour cherry syrup is a rich alternative $5. Simple and satisfying.

This restaurant is perfect for diners who love their sport as much as they love their food. Adorning the sleek, stone-tiled walls is a plethora of signed cricket memorabilia and plasma screens showing all kinds of sport. But there’s no contest between decor and the dishes — Bundu Khan certainly puts Pakistani dining firmly on the Sydney map. There are also Indian dishes such as the ubiquitous tandooris and tikkas rendered with as much skill as the Pakistani specialties. Tubs of colourful dondurma (Turkish icecream) greet you on entry to this traditional Turkish cafe, which seems a cross between a sheesha bar and a well-furnished home. Plush fabric covers the benches, chairs and glass-topped tables and despite the recent spruce-up the new owners have left the traditional Turkish textiles and copper kitchenalia hanging from every available wall space. The scene is vividly set and the food doesn’t let it down. Order a series of dishes to share, such as erme corbasa, a warming lentil soup served with pillowy Turkish bread $5, pilaki, borlotti beans cooked with sautéed vegetables $4.90, and guvec, diced lamb fillets with buttery walnuts and flame-grilled vegetables $11. Pide, rice dishes and grilled meats are all there. Finish with a scoop of chewy dondurma.
