The best of the west

July 2009

s Mudgee the organic capital of Australia? Well, if not, it’s second only to McLaren Vale — and the jury’s out on that one. If you’d like to have a good nose around Mudgee’s farms and vineyards, go to www.mudgeefinefoods.com.au and check out the Mudgee Walks calendar, and you could become a free-ranging human. Mudgee Walks run through to December 20 and visit such place as Gunnemaroo Olive Oil, the Lowe Family Wine Company, Ormiston Free Range Pork farm and Leaning Oak Winery & Dairy. It’s a great way to see seasonality up close and real — and find out what’s different about organic farming and food.

If you don’t have the time to head west, don’t worry. Orange is coming to town on Monday July 27 at Ravesi’s Hotel in Bondi from 6pm for the launch of a week-long program of Orange events in Sydney. Taste Orange @ Bondi runs from August 24 to August 30. The winemakers will be launching their range of Sauvignon Blanc wines, this being Orange’s hero variety and, according to local winemaker Phillip Shaw, as good as it gets anywhere in the world. You be the judge. There’ll also be regional Orange food delicacies, musicians and art — read all about it at www.tasteoforange.com.au
