Cheese Champs

November 2010

Once again, I was invited to judge at the Australian Specialist Cheesemakers’ Association (ASCA) awards. And what a luvverly line-up of luscious cheeses. It was quite a small selection this year (drought), but those on the table were really good, especially the blues — the best line-up I remember in years. See the winners below.

After judging on a Saturday, I went to the launch of the Sydney Morning Herald Good Food Shopping Guide (plug, plug), which this year was held at the fantastic Formaggi Ocello (Shop 16/425 Bourke Street Surry Hills Ph 9357 7878) whose owners, Carmelo and Sogna Ocello, very kindly put on a tasting of some of their finest Italian cheeses. Now this is the interesting bit. I very carefully went through each of the cheeses on the table with a palate still remembering the Australian ones I’d tasted only two days before and, I’ll tell you what, the Aussies stood up to the Eye-ties exceptionally well. In fact, our blues would have won hands down. Get some of the Telegraph Hill Blue into you as soon as you can.
