Bargain alley

June 2009

One of the curious things about living in Glebe is the Backlane Bargain Bazaar. Here’s how it works. Leave something you don’t want in one of the wide, dunny cart-friendly lanes –and it’ll be gone before you’ve closed the back gate. We did it recently with an old cactus clothes drier (haven’t replaced it either). The electricians helping us couldn’t believe it. They put it down, turned to go and a truck pulled up and scored it.

So that’s what we’ve got for you here –  bargains. Take Kingsley’s (The Wharf, Cowper Wharf Road Woolloomooloo 1300 546 475). On Sunday evenings from 5pm, there’s the $18 roast; Monday, the $25 Alaskan King Crab; Tuesday $25 hearty soup  and – blast from the past! – Steak Diane; and Wednesday, $18 Roast Byron Bay Berkshire Pork.

We first came across Miss Chu (Shop 1/50 Bourke Street, Darlinghurst, Ph 8356 9988) as a caterer offering yum cha and describing herself as “the queen of ricepaper rolls”. Then we found her delightful café where you get to chu on her Peking duck pancakes ($2.20 a serve), fish of the day ($13), Vietnamese warm vermicelli salads ($9) and pho ($7). A real find — check it out at www.misschu.com.au

And down at Danks Street Depot (1/2 Danks Street, Waterloo, Ph 9698 2201), do dinner at 6pm sharp and you get three courses (chef’s choice) plus a glass of wine for $35. Bargain.

And, finally, another recent discovery — at least for me — is Wine Odyssey Australia (39–43 Argyle Street, The Rocks, Ph 1300 136 498), situated in an 1886 building formerly known as the British Seaman’s Hotel and now a champion of Australian wines. It’s well worth a visit, if only for the Growers’ Market Lunch where you can tuck into a platter of food collected from the market stalls with a glass of premium Australian wine for $25. Or go during the week for a Lunch Odyssey Dish matched with a glass of good wine for $30.
