And Still They Come Dept.

June 2009

And we say it again: what GFC? Money continues to pour into new restaurants all over town. Here are two worth mentioning this month:

ripplesRipples at Sydney Wharf (56 Pirrama Road, Pyrmont, Ph 9571 1999) is a sister to the other Ripples at Milsons Point and Chowder Bay and is open for breakfast lunch and dinner. Designed by Richard Koh, it’s mostly outside with views across to Darling Harbour. Owners are Grant and Yvonne Andronicus (yep, the coffee bean family) with chef Richard Park dishing up simple, unfussy bistro fare.

More openly Greek, Ouzo 88 (88 Crown Street, Woolloomooloo, Ph 9326 0888) is offering the full catastrophe (to paraphrase Zorba): ouzomezedes — that is, mezedes matched with ouzo and other great Greek wines over five courses for a ridiculous $59, and there’s a full a la carte menu as well. Ouzo 88 is the brainchild of Nicholas (Nikos) Kalis who grew up in a deli in Marrickville where the family made wine in the backyard. I tasted some of that Marrickville Greek wine — once.
